The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston, MA) is an imaginative recreation of an Italian palace filled with art collected and installed by Isabella Gardner in the early 20th century. The arrangement of the objects which have not been changed per the founder’s wishes, surround a lush courtyard filled with plants, flowers and ancient works of art. In January 2012, the museum opened a new Renzo Piano-designed addition that allows for more engagement with art in a studio space, a Living Room, special exhibition gallery, concert and lecture hall, and greenhouse classroom. The atmosphere of both the historic building and the new wing encourage visitors to immerse themselves in art and the artistic process.
This app is a pilot project to expand access to the museum. This app focuses on the third floor and part of the first floor of the historic building, areas that are difficult to access for visitors in wheelchairs. The virtual tour of these spaces offers floor to ceiling exploration of some of the museum’s unique galleries with the ability to zoom in for closer inspection. Text overviews of the gallery spaces are included, as well as select highlights of the collection.
Once the app has been downloaded, no Internet connectivity is required to access its content.
